Chhapaak directed by Meghna Gulzar is a striking depiction of the hideous world we live in. The movie opens with a protest scene against the Delhi rape and from that very scene, it sucks you into its world. The word Chhapaak is used only once in one of the very early scenes of the film and it burned my entire body, realizing the horror of how a Chhapaak can destroy someone’s entire world forever. The script doesn’t make the protagonist a hero right away but it shows you the hardships she has to go through and makes you feel how heroic she should be to be able do that. Deepika plays Malti and It is one of her finest performances to date. From her screams to her tiny smiles, or from her trauma to vulnerability…she does it with great sensitivity that saves Chhapaak from being a melodrama. The movie asks a lot of questions which are very important and it is kind of shocking that the maximum punishment someone can get for throwing acid on someone’s face and destroying their dreams and disfiguring their body forever is just 10 years of imprisonment.
Deepika is supported by a number of brilliant actors… Vikrant who plays Amol, Madhurjeet Sarghi who plays Malti’s lawyer, Vishal Dahiya who plays Babbu and everyone else has done such a beautiful job that leaves you so satisfied with the acting part. 19-year-old Malti is thrown acid on her face by a family friend whose flirtatious behavior and messages weren’t entertained by Malti. He disfigures her forever. Malti undergoes 7 surgeries to get her mouth, nose and ears a shape. When you see it and know this horror is an actual depiction of the true story of Lakshmi Agarwal who was attacked when she was 15-year-old….it numbs your body for a second. Deepika gets a lot of moments to shine and she does it with such an elegance. Sometimes it is just a stare, a smile or a drop of the tear but they convey volumes. I wished if Vikrant had more to do since he is such a smart actor but it is the story of Malti and it’s all about her.
Meghna is one of the very few directors who know what to really exclude in storytelling. Chhapaak gives no relevance to the religion of the attacker, it doesn’t spend time on building up the villain because it’s not relevant when we all know what he did. No such sexist dialogues or scenes against men or celebrating womanhood. The movie sticks to a gross crime that an individual did to another and the victim’s life is destroyed forever. Her life matters more than religion, sex or anything else. On the other hand, Meghna shows nice men like Amol, and you see a husband who brings tea to his wife and her friend and takes care of his daughter since his wife is busy fighting for Malti. Hats off to Meghna. Finally, the music of Shankar Ehsan Loy is brilliant, especially the Chhapaak song which is played in the most important scene in the movie, that blows your mind away. Gulzar has penned the song in such a way that you get all the pain of the victims. It’s a beautiful movie, more than that of an important movie. I’m going with 4 stars because it’s the needs of the hour to have such stories told and accepted. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
